Lantern Terms of Service

Last updated: August 1, 2026

These Terms of Service (the Terms) govern your access to and use of Lantern's Android and iOS applications, browser extension, websites, APIs made available through those products, and related language-learning services (collectively, the Services).

By accessing or using the Services, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use the Services. If you use Lantern on behalf of an organization, you represent that you have authority to bind that organization to these Terms.

1. Who May Use Lantern

You must be at least 13 years old to use Lantern. If the law where you live requires a higher minimum age or parental consent for online services, you may use Lantern only if that requirement is satisfied. Do not use the Services if applicable law prohibits you from doing so.

2. The Services

Lantern provides language-learning tools that may include:

Features can vary by platform, country, language, account state, app version, and release channel. A feature shown in one Lantern product may not be available in another.

3. Accounts and Credentials

The mobile apps may automatically create an anonymous or guest account, authentication credential, and Lantern user ID when you first use the app. You may also be able to sign in through a supported third-party identity provider.

You are responsible for:

An anonymous account may be recoverable only from the device or session holding its credential. Clearing app data, uninstalling the app, or losing the device may make an anonymous account and locally stored information inaccessible.

4. Permission to Use the Services

Subject to these Terms, Lantern grants you a personal, limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable license to use the Services for lawful personal or internal educational purposes.

This license does not transfer ownership of Lantern software, designs, trademarks, content, databases, or other intellectual property. Rights not expressly granted are reserved by Lantern and the relevant rights holders.

5. Your Content

Your Content means text, notes, saved vocabulary, context sentences, messages, feedback, and other material you submit, save, or transmit through the Services. You retain any rights you already hold in Your Content.

You give Lantern a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free license to host, store, reproduce, transmit, format, and process Your Content only as reasonably necessary to:

This license ends when Your Content is deleted from active Lantern systems, except to the extent limited retention is permitted under the Privacy Policy or applicable law. You represent that you have the rights and permissions needed to submit Your Content and allow this processing.

Do not submit confidential or highly sensitive information unless it is necessary for the feature you intentionally choose to use. You are responsible for reviewing content before submitting it to Lantern.

6. Automated and AI-Generated Results

Some Lantern features use automated systems or third-party language models to produce translations, simplifications, definitions, explanations, corrections, conversations, or exercises.

Automated results may be inaccurate, incomplete, outdated, offensive, or unsuitable for your circumstances. They are provided for general language-learning purposes and are not professional, legal, medical, financial, safety, or other expert advice. You must review important information independently before relying on it.

You remain responsible for how you use, publish, or act on an automated result. Lantern does not guarantee that generated output is unique or that similar output will not be provided to another user. To the extent permitted by applicable law and subject to third-party rights, Lantern does not claim ownership of any rights you may have in an automated result solely because it was generated through the Services. The legal status of generated content can vary by jurisdiction and circumstances.

7. Acceptable Use

You must not use the Services to:

We may investigate suspected misuse and take proportionate action, including limiting or suspending access, when reasonably necessary to protect the Services, users, or third parties.

8. Third-Party Services and Content

Lantern relies on service providers for functions such as authentication, hosting, language processing, analytics, and software delivery. Your use of a third-party provider may also be governed by that provider's terms and privacy policy.

The Services may contain links to third-party websites or provide access to public domain, openly licensed, or third-party reading and dictionary content. Lantern does not control third-party services and is not responsible for their independent content, availability, or practices. Any third-party or open-source component remains subject to its applicable license and notices.

If you obtained Lantern through an app store, the store's terms also apply to your use and distribution of the app. For Apple App Store downloads, Apple's standard Licensed Application End User License Agreement applies unless a valid custom EULA replaces it.

9. Privacy

The Lantern Privacy Policy explains how Lantern collects, uses, discloses, retains, and protects information. By using the Services, you acknowledge that Lantern will process information as described in that policy and in any just-in-time notice presented for a specific feature.

10. Feedback

If you voluntarily submit ideas, suggestions, or feedback about Lantern, you grant us a worldwide, perpetual, irrevocable, non-exclusive, royalty-free right to use and incorporate that feedback without restriction or compensation. This does not give us ownership of personal information or other content submitted for support.

11. Lantern Intellectual Property

Lantern and its licensors own the Services and their software, design, branding, documentation, and original content. Lantern, its logos, and related branding may not be used in a way that suggests endorsement or affiliation without permission.

If you believe content available through Lantern infringes your copyright or other rights, email support@withlantern.ai with the subject Lantern Rights Concern and enough information for us to investigate.

12. Fees

Lantern currently does not offer paid subscriptions or in-app purchases. If paid features are introduced, we will present the applicable price, billing period, renewal, cancellation, refund, and additional terms before purchase, as required by law and the relevant app store.

13. Account Deletion, Suspension, and Termination

You may stop using Lantern at any time. Removing the app or extension does not by itself delete information already synchronized with Lantern.

Instructions for requesting account and data deletion are available at withlantern.ai/account-deletion. Where an authenticated in-app deletion control is available, use that control for an anonymous account while you still have access to its session.

We may suspend or terminate access when reasonably necessary because of a material or repeated violation of these Terms, legal requirements, fraud, abuse, security risk, or harm to Lantern, users, or third parties. Where appropriate and legally required, we will provide notice and a reasonable opportunity to appeal.

Sections that by their nature should survive termination, including intellectual property, disclaimers, limitations of liability, and dispute provisions, will continue to apply.

14. Service Availability and Updates

We work to keep Lantern available, but the Services may occasionally be interrupted, delayed, changed, or unavailable. We do not promise that every feature or language will always be available or that data synchronization will always be immediate or error-free.

We may provide app-store releases, extension updates, and approved mobile web-bundle updates. Updates may add, remove, or change features and may be required for security, compatibility, or continued operation.

We may discontinue a Service or material feature. When reasonably practicable, we will provide advance notice and information about how affected account data will be handled, subject to security, legal, and technical limitations.

15. Disclaimers

To the maximum extent permitted by law, the Services are provided "as is" and "as available." Lantern disclaims implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, non-infringement, and uninterrupted or error-free operation.

These disclaimers do not exclude warranties, statutory guarantees, or remedies that cannot lawfully be excluded, including mandatory consumer rights.

16. Limitation of Liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, Lantern and its operators, affiliates, licensors, and service providers will not be liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, exemplary, or punitive damages, or for loss of profits, goodwill, data, or business opportunities arising from or related to the Services.

Where liability cannot be fully excluded, Lantern's aggregate liability arising from the Services will be limited to the greater of the amount you paid Lantern for the Services during the 12 months before the event giving rise to the claim or USD 50.

Nothing in these Terms excludes or limits liability where doing so would be unlawful, including liability for fraud, willful misconduct, gross negligence where applicable, death or personal injury caused by negligence, or violation of mandatory consumer rights.

17. Changes to These Terms

We may update these Terms to reflect changes to the Services, law, security needs, or business practices. We will update the Last updated date and provide additional notice when required or when a change materially affects your rights.

Changes apply prospectively from their effective date. If you do not agree to revised Terms, you must stop using the Services. We will request affirmative agreement when required by law.

18. Applicable Law and Disputes

These Terms are governed by applicable law. Any choice-of-law or dispute rule must not deprive you of mandatory consumer protections or access to courts that cannot lawfully be waived where you live.

Before filing a formal claim, you and Lantern should attempt to resolve the issue by contacting support@withlantern.ai. This informal step does not limit either party's right to seek urgent relief or use a regulator, consumer-protection body, small-claims process, or court where permitted by law.

19. General Terms

If a provision of these Terms is found unenforceable, the remaining provisions remain in effect, and the affected provision will be enforced to the maximum extent permitted by law. A failure to enforce a provision is not a waiver. You may not transfer these Terms without our consent, but Lantern may transfer them as part of a merger, reorganization, financing, or sale of the Services, subject to applicable law.

These Terms, the Privacy Policy, applicable in-product notices, and any app-store terms form the agreement concerning your use of the Services. They do not limit rights that cannot lawfully be waived.
